오직 예수안에서

지난 수요일에 오랫동안 멕시코 티화나 지역에서 사역해 오신 김동철 선교사님의 선교지를 답사 차 다녀왔습니다. 샌디에고를 지나 멕시코 국경을 통과해 티후아나 지역으로 들어섰을 때 많은 집들과 자동차들이 눈에 띄었지만, 전반적으로 낡고 무질서한 인상을 주었습니다.

티화나 시내에서 불과 몇 블록 떨어지지 않은 곳에 선교사님의 사역지가 있었습니다. 가파른 언덕 주변으로는 집들이 낡은 판자촌 같은 집들이 들어서 있었고 비포장 도로 곳곳에는 깊게 패인 구덩이들이 눈에 띄었습니다. 동네 여기저기에는 쓰레기를 모아 불태운 흔적들도 보였습니다. 약 20년 전 파라과이로 단기 선교를 갔을 때 방문했던 빈민촌과 거의 비슷한 모습이었습니다.

그처럼 열악한 환경 속에서 살아가는 사람들을 보며, 하나님께 충분히 감사드리지 못한 제 삶을 되돌아보게 되었고, 마음 깊이 죄송한 마음이 들었습니다. 몇 시간 동안 선교지를 돌아보며 두 가지 관점에서 생각해 보았습니다. 하나는 리더 양육에 대한 부분이고, 다른 하나는 현지 목회자와 선교사님의 사역을 위해 어떤 봉사와 섬김이 필요한지에 관한 것이었습니다. 앞으로 이 두 가지 관점을 가지고 기도하며, 성령의 인도하심을 따라 우리 교회가 어떻게 섬길 수 있을지 그 길을 찾고자 합니다.

Last Wednesday, we visited the mission field of Pastor Dong-Chul Kim, who has been serving in the Tijuana region of Mexico for many years. After passing through San Diego and crossing the Mexican border, we entered Tijuana, where we saw many houses and cars—but the overall impression was one of disarray and disorder.

The mission site was located just a few blocks away from downtown Tijuana. Around the steep hills stood clusters of makeshift houses, resembling shantytowns, and the unpaved roads were riddled with deep potholes. In various parts of the neighborhood, there were signs of trash having been gathered and burned. The scene closely resembled a poor village I had visited nearly 20 years ago during a short-term mission trip to Paraguay.

Seeing people live in such harsh conditions led me to reflect on my own life and how I have often failed to give God the gratitude He deserves. I felt deeply humbled and repentant. As I toured the mission field for several hours, two key perspectives came to mind: one was the need for leadership development, and the other was how we could support the ministries of local pastors and missionaries through service and acts of love. With these two areas in mind, I intend to continue praying and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, so that our church may find meaningful ways to serve.
